On April twenty fourth, nineteen ninety four, David Robinson wins the NBA scoring title by putting up an amazing seventy one points to be Shaquille O'Neil to win the scoring title. And here's the story behind this iconic moment in NBA history to date on Daily Sports History. Welcome to Daily Sports History. I'm Ethan Reese, your guide to a rapid deep dive into sports history every day now. David Robinson had a very unique way to make his way to the NBA. He actually started at the Naval Academy, leading them to their best collegiate time in the school's history. It was taken number one overall, despite the fact that he had to serve two years in the Navy before he could play. But luckily, the Navy let him out of his naval requirements early do this the fact that he was so tall he was seven to one and their ships are designed for people no taller than sixty six and this allowed him the chance to join the San Antonio Spurs that drafted him and started to lead them to become a powerhouse in the NBA. But in the nineteen ninety three ninety four season, Robinson really wanted the chance to win the MVP. He had been battling with a key Elijah On for the chance to be MVP and be the best Sinner in the league, and they had a rivalry as they both played in Texas. They were both Sinners, and they both had immense skill on the courts. They helped better each other. That year, Robinson really wanted the chance to be MVP as there was a good chance with Michael Jordan no longer being in the league. So he went on a terror that year in scoring that he had never done before and he would never do since, averaging almost thirty points a game. But there was another young Sinner in Orlando that was gunning for the same title. Shaquille O'Neal was coming up and starting to establish himself in the league. It was also scoring at a unlarming rate. Robinson thought if he won the scoring title, maybe he would have a chance to win the VP over Hikeem Elijahwa. As the season was coming to an end, David Robinson had a good chance. He averaged more points, more assists, and more steals than Elijaha, so the team hit. Robinson really wanted him to get that title, But on the final day of the season, him and check were tight for their points total and he needed to outscoorse Schep and they were playing at the same time, so he had no idea how many points he would actually need. So the team decided they were gonna make sure he got the ball and they were playing the La Clippers. We actually had some good players on their team in Dominique Wilkins, Mark Jackson, and Ron Harper, but the team just could not compete with Robinson that day as they were feeding him and despite the fact that the Clippers were double and triple teaming him at times, Robinson wouldn't give the ball up and continued to score over and over, beating the Spurs to score one one hundred and twelve points, beating the Clippers, who only had ninety five and despite scoring seventy one points, Robinson also had five assists in the game, but no other player on the Spurs made it to double digits and the second highest scoring player Dennis Rondman with eight points, and despite the team blowing out the Clippers, Robinson stayed on the courts almost the whole game for the chance to score as much as possible. Though many viewed this as a gimmick and thought it shouldn't even count for him to get the scoring title, and Shaq even thought maybe he was in his head as he was just thinking about beating Shack for the scoring title the entire game. But for Robinson, he really wanted the chance to be the MVP and to be called the greatest in the league, and being a scoring champ doesn't hurt on your MVP resime. And that night Shaquille O'Neill only scored thirty two points, a great game, but nowhere close to David Robinson's seventy one, and that gave the scoring championship to Robinson, then at the time joined Elge Baylor, David Thomas, and Welt Chamberlain as the only other players to score over seventy points. After the game, Robinson said it was unbelievable and that his team had been behind him the entire year, always pushing him to be a leader in always wanting him to never be afraid to score, and Dominique Wilkins after the game said his team had no heart and no pride to try to win and it was a ridiculous thing that they helped him get seventy one points and that he probably won himself the MVP that night. Unfortunately, he lost in the MVP voting to chem Elaijah on that year, but this really gave the league notice of David Robinson, and the following year he actually won THEVP. Despite his stats looking down greater than nineteen ninety four season, that doesn't matter, because he won the MVP and a few years later he would go on to win and there be a championship and become a legend in the NBA and arguably one of the greatest sinners of all time. And David Robinson didn't just sit back and see what happens. He had a goal and he wanted to be known as the best, and to do that, he did all he could to make sure that happened. He could have just scored what he regularly scored on any given night and maybe he would have beat Chef, but maybe not. And he made sure there was no chance he was not becoming the scoring key in nineteen ninety four. He took the ball into his own hands, just like sometimes we need to do the same. I'm gonna put the ball in your hands to share this episode with someone else. Then come back tomorrow for more daily sports history.
