In America, golf has become somewhat of an obsession for any of us. Anywhere you look, you'd probably be driving near a golf course. For some of us, it's a passion. For some of us, it's a great outing to go have a few drinks and just enjoy time with friends. But it grew into a huge sports and now all started in a pasture back in the eighteen hundreds. Here's a story behind how golf started in America. Welcome to Daily Sports History, I mean than Reese, your guide to wrap a deep dive into sports history every day. To start the story of golf in America, we have to go back to Yonkers, New Jersey. In eighteen eighty eight, a Scottish immigrant named John Reid, fueled by his passion, embarked on a remarkable venture with his friend Robert Lockhart. Together, they undertook a groundbreaking, innovative world that would forever change the America landscaping on the estate of John Reid's employer, John Sloan, the duo embarked on an ambitious project, constructing what would be the first golf course in America and doing a demonstration showing them a sport people had never seen before, a vision they borrowed from their homeland in Scotland, where golf was created. Red and Lockhart set about transporting the landscaping into a nine hole course. Piece by piece, they laid the groundwork, sculpting fairways and greens, particulously crafting would be a historic golf venue. Their efforts marked a pivotal moment introducing golf to America. It wasn't just about building a course, It's about sowing the seeds of a sport that would take root and flourish across the nation. Their golf course was relatively modest by today's standards. It symbolized the monumental leap forward. It was a testament to the passion and dedication of these pioneers, bringing their beloved Scottish pastime that they loved so deer and thinking that Americans could love this too, as it was a simple game that didn't require a whole lot of athletic ability, and with a few clubs in a ball, you could really enjoy your time outdoors. Charles Blair McDonald often hailed as the father of American golf. McDonald was crucial role in the early sports development. McDonald founded The Chicago Golf Club a beacon of innovation in the realm of golf course architecture. It wasn't merely a club, It was a birthplace for the first eighteen hole golf course in the United States. McDonald's vision and expertise in designing the course layd the groundwork for what became common today in golf courses across America in the world. The Chicago Golf Club wasn't just another course, It was a testament to the dedication and allowed golf to thrive and flourish. Whole course was a milestone and something that had never been done on American soil, and something that would grow every day as many would start copying it throughout America in the world, having these golf courses allowed for championships to come open, such as the Open Championship, and allowed for more integration than just men participating in the sport. The Ladies Golf Union was formed in eighteen ninety three, paving the way for the LPGA. This all helped lead to the PGA, the Professional Golfers Association, the primary pro organization today in America and across the world, and helped grow the popularity of the sport and allowed huge names such as Jack Nicholas, Arnold Palmer, and Tiger Woods to take the course and become household names. We'll have to dive into the creation of the PGA in another episode, but today America makes up forty three percent of the world's golf courses, with over fifteen hundred golf courses in the US alone being very small nine courses, some being country clubs that some of us could just hope maybe to break par on just even one whole in those humble beginnings. The golf industry is worth eighty four billion dollars and has grown two percent in the last decade. Hard to imagine all this started with just a tiny nine hole course in eighteen eighty eight.
