On February third, eighteen seventy six, one of the most important sports businesses ever got started. It was the Spaulding Brothers who make many of the balls in sports equipment that we use to this day. Here's the story behind how it all got started today on Daily Sports History. Welcome to Daily Sports History. I'm Ethan Reese, your guide to a rapid deep dive into sports history. Every day. One thing we often forget about when we're playing a sport is the ball. Dun soccer, football, tennis, baseball, golf. All these sports require a ball to be played, and two men are the driving force behind the balls that we play with. Albert and Jay Walker Spaulding started the Spaulding Company makes most of the balls and sporting equipment that we all know and love today. So i February third, eighteen seventy six, the Spalding brothers used eight hundred dollars roughly twenty three hundred dollars today, given to them by their mother to start the ag Baulding and Brothers, Chicago based sports store that offered high in quality goods that others could not match. One thing they used with the investment from their mother, not just to open a store, but their own line of merchandise set a new standard in the sports world because they knew exactly what the athletes needed and quality was the most important thing, and their background helped them understand this. Before starting the store, Albert was a professional baseball player with the Rockford Pioneers, an amateur club. Though he had offers to play with the Protein and Washington, New York, and Cleveland, he decided to go into the business world at the request of his mother, so he started working at a grocery store and an insurance company in Chicago, but these businesses went out of business shortly after beginning, so he took this as a sign that maybe he should continue his sports journey. He accepted a contract for forty dollars a week from the Chicago as self see yours, and then he pitched for the Boston Red Stockings for five years before ending his career as a pitcher manager with the Chicago White Stockings and even led the White Stockings to a National League pinnate. And one thing that sets Spaulting apart was the ingenious things he used for his equipment, including a baseball glove that helped him set himself apart on the field. After he retired, he joined his brother to start the Spaulting Store, where Albert he used his connections to become the official manufacturer of baseballs for the National League, which gave them visibility across the whole country and allowed them to find their niche in the sporting world. Over the next twenty five years, they continued to grow and open stores in New York and Boston and fourteen other establishments, and they even began to sell some of their manufacturing products to others even though Spaulding was competing with them. They had an internal policy to guarantee their quality, and they fixed their prices so that the profit marginians were always set. And they even expanded beyond baseball, having exporting equipment such as skates and other ball sports besides baseball creating the actual balls, and they're still the manufacturer of baseballs for Major League Baseball and basketballs for the NBA, and they continued to innovate, and not just stagnet as. The balls have changed over the years and have become something we see every time we watch a sport, but we may not even realize it. One of the most important things that the Spalding Brothers did was provide uniformity to the sports. Previously, balls would be different sizes, different weights, not consistent, but their attention to excellence and details make sure that every ball was the same no matter where you were playing, which allowed the sport to be played everywhere but still be the same sport and you could go play with someone else and not feel like you were learning something new every time you went there, which is a huge development in sports and allowed all the sports to grow as we could play with anybody, anywhere, anytime.
