One year ago to day, on February seventh, twenty twenty three, Lebron James did something amazing, becoming the all time leader in the NBA in points, passing the legendary Kareem Onto Jabbors. Here's the story behind this iconic event to day on Daily Sports History. Welcome to Daily Sports History. I'm Ethon Reese, your guide to a rapid deep dive into sports history every day. Back in two thousand and three, Lebron was barely eighteen, fresh out of high school, and I already had the nickname the Chosen One, as his skill for someone of that age was akin to a young Michael Jordan, and his body was built like a power forward, standing nearly sixty nine close to two hundred fifty pounds. He was drafted into the NBA by a local team with Cleveland Cavaliers, as he was just miles away in Akron, Ohio growing up. But it's hard to believe that day that he would ever be the all time leader in points. To get that record requires a lot of things to happen. One, you need to play a lot of games. If Lebron James were to play eighty two games a season for twenty seasons, he had to average twenty three points a game. He did more so than did play all eighty two games, but it averaged way more than twenty three points. So not only does it show his skill on the court, but also shows how durable and how much he actually played and in every season he's been a part of as it's been nearly as he's played twenty seasons in the league. But on February seventh, he's coming up against Oklahoma City Thunder and only needed thirty six points to break the record. One of the greatest records in sports. Greenmanto Dubbar had had the records sin nineteen eighty four when he surpassed well Chamberlain, a former teammate, and raise the bar. For even five seasons after that, no one else had come even close, and the next closest being karlm alone, but never really getting to the point where he could actually eclipse Koreem. In the third quarter versus Oklahoma City, well the Laker for trailing there was only twenty one seconds left, Lebron takes his fade away jumper, giving him the record to become an all time leader in points in the NBA. We'll post a video of this online. It's great to check out because you'll see almost no one in the stands is actually watching the moment, but capture on their phones. A story for social commentary for sure, but also gave us great views of what happened. Lebron did a lot in his career up to this point, winning multiple championships with three different teams. He won one with Miami, won one on his trip back to Cleveland, and one while he was with the Lakers during the pandemic season. Though he's gotten criticism over the years, he's always been a well round player, not just a score first option, as his assist totals is high in the NBA records as well, depending on how long he continues to play, has a chance to maybe pass that option as well, has a chance to break even more records. Even more astonishing is off the court. He's also become the first billionaire while playing in the NBA. Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson have become billionaires off the court, but Lebron has become a billionaire while playing, which is a huge testament to his brand and who he is as a player. He will always be in the conversation for one of the greatest of all time. A debate has happened all the time, whether Tim Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Oscar Robinson, Kareem. We could go round and round for who's the greatest, But right now he's the king for the points. No one can take that away from me. And who knows how high he can go as he continues to play to this day. Thank you for listening to to Day's Daily Sports History.
